We've Got The Kids With Us and We're On Cape Cod on Vacation

And it's raining! (It does happen) or it's overcast and no beach day! (that too). Well, I suppose you could contact me at jmcgann@jackconway.com or at http://www.joemcgann.com to begin your search for a vacation home, but somehow I think your vacation time on a rainy day is better spent finding some fun indoor things to do with the kids.

There are tons of activities for a rainy day, from Ryan's Entertainment Center or the Zooquarium, both in Yarmouth, to the Heritage Museum and Plantation in Sandwich, from the Natural History Museum in Brewster to the National Seashore Interpretative Center in Eastham and the Widah Museum in Provincetown, there's fun, history, and, of course at the end of the day, there's always one of those famous Cape Cod clam shacks to enjoy a typical New England seashore dinner.

There's even a drive-in movie theater in Wellfleet, one of the last in the country.

And if all else fails you can spend time at one of the many tee shirt shops letting the kids pick up that perfect reminder of a great Cape Cod vacation. There's also downtown Hyannis, which is enjoying a terrific renaissance, with many new shops and restaurants.

In my neighborhood there are a large number of summer rentals and last week every young family on the East Coast must have landed here. There were over sixty pre-school and early elementary age youngsters here and they all walked by my house on their way to the beach. After the one rainy day I asked them what they did to pass the time and they very excitedly told me about their adventures, involving all of the above and more.

My message here is that Cape Cod is not a one-dimensional vacation area. There is plenty to keep a family occupied on the inevitable rainy day and there are just as many memories for the kids in a trip to P'Town as there are in boogie boarding that perfect wave. Some of my favorite memories as a kid were the family's rainy day activities.

And while you're visiting all the great spots I've mentioned, think how much better it would be if you had a summer home on Cape Cod. Now, that's when you call me!
